Alan Bruce Thompson is Professor of Petrology at both ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich.

His current research interests can be divided into four related themes:

1) Physical and chemical evolution of the Earths lithosphere

2) Hotspots and wetspots (Fluid and magma evolution in the Earths crust and mantle)

3) Natural fluid behaviour at high pressure

4) Mechanics of orogenesis.
